Living or Dead

This week I want you to take a few moments to think about a real life scenerio.  Let's pretend that someone you know is involved in a car crash and is hurt really bad.  You hear that they have damage to their brain, in fact you hear that they are "Brain Dead".  Based on our definition of life and the seven processes, is that person still living?  Explain your thoughts!

78 comments:

  1. If someone I knew had brain damage and I hear they are “Brain Dead” based on our definition of the 7 life processes they are still alive. The person with brain damage can still move. They can still respire which is breathing. They are still sensitive to the world. They are still able to grow. They can still reproduce cells. They are still able to excrete (give off waste:urinate, sweat etc...). They are still able to obtain the nutrients they need. To be alive you need to be able to do the 7 life processes and this person with brain damage can so they are still alive.

  2. I thinks my friend is still living because he can do all the seven life processes movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduce, excretion and he can still get nutrition. He can move around allowing him to do movement. He can also do respiration because he can make energy and breathe. He is still capable of doing sensitivity because is someone touches him he will know and feel that someone did. He can still grow in height and in every thing else. He can still do reproduction because his skin can reproduce. He can excrete by sweat and he can still poop and pee. He can still get nutrition through food and water. There for he can do all seven live process and that make him alive.

  3. Since the friend is brain dead, he has no activity moving in his brain. That's what brain dead means. Even though there is no activity in the brain, the heart is still pumping blood, and the body is still In motion. The properties of life that still applies to the friend, includes the followingr. Movement, Respiration, growth, reproduction, excrete, and obtain needed nutrition. Therefore the only propertie that are missing from the friend is sensitivity. So the friend is still livin, fairly healthy. The brain can restart at any moment, so the friend is actually doing quite good, unless his brain does not start up again.

  4. Yes that person is living. The brain can still work but the more advanced thoughts would be erased and unable to recreate. He would be able to move, breath, see, grow hair, reproduce cells, use the restroom, and receive nutrition. The brain would possibly get transplanted as well. The other possibilities are endless. The technology we have today would even possibly completely heal the injured area. The person involved in the incident would still be alive.

  5. My friend will still be alive because he can do all of the life processes he can still move from place to place. He can still respire he still collects energy. My friend is still sensitive to his surroundings. My friend can still grow. He can still breath and take in oxygen. He can still create waste and get rid of it. and he can still eat. Even though my friend is brain dead he can still do MRS.GREN

  6. If I had a friend that was in a car accident and was “brain dead” I would assume that they are dead. This is because when you are brain dead you can not move, do reproduction, grow, complete respiration, excrete, have sensitivity, or be able to get nutrition. This is all caused by your brain being basically shut down or not conscious. So for those reasons I would think that my friend would be dead.

  7. I myself know a little bit about being brain dead, and based off of the knowledge that I have been able to gather, I think that your friend would be “dead”. The main reason why I think that this is the case is because of the fact that you would not be aware of your surroundings. Your friend would be unconscious, making him unaware. Not only that but you also wouldn’t be able to move when you are “brain dead”, taking away another one of the life process. Just from the reasons alone, technically your friend would be categorized as “dead”.

  8. If the person involved in the car crash is “brain dead” then there could be multiple possibilities to be living, non living, or dead depending on what brain dead means. Technically this person would be dead because he can’t do all of the seven life processes. All that person would really be able to is sit in a hospital bed and eat, excrete, and sleep. To be alive you have to be able to move, respire, have sensitivity, grow, reproduce, excrete, and obtain nutrients. Basically the only process that the brain dead person could not do is move. Even though he can’t do just one of the processes this unfortunate person is legally dead.

  9. In this scenario, a brain dead person, I believe that they are still alive. They can still do all of the life processes though sweating, breathing, going to the bathroom, and having your cells reproduce. A brain dead person is just a very dumbed down person, because of health issues. Even if they never talk or walk again they are still living, even if you can’t tell. A person with this scenario is alive, but not the same.

  10. That person is not living because it is like being in a comma. He can't breath without a machine, he can't go to the bathroom, he can't reproduce, he can't eat and he can't open his eyes. He might be breathing but all the others he can't do. It is like he is sleeping forever. If he got token of the machine that helps him breath then he will die.

  12. If a person I knew and had a crash and that person was brain dead I’d say that person is still alive. For example it was a guy he would have all of M.R.S. G.R.E.N. because he can move, he can breath and he can sense things around him. Same thing with G.R.E.N. because he can grow more and reproduce; he can still go to the bathroom. Lastly he can sweat or things like that and of course get and give off nutrients. Pretty much its just his brain that is damaged. He can do all of these, its just his brain. So overall yes he is still living!

I think he is dead because he can't move because he forgot how to walk and talk I also think he is alive because he can reproduce and let out waist.

  14. Referring back to MRS.GREN, I believe my friend who is “brain dead” is technically alive for the following reasons. First off, he/she can move around, whether it is by wheelchair, or even by moving his/her eyes. A fact is 99% of people die from cardiac deaths which occur when the heart stops circulating blood through the body. The other 1% of deaths is caused from brain deaths which occur after brain cells do not get enough oxygen and do not get replaced. Our friend can breath, so he/she can respire. The person can probably get hot or cold, making him/her sensitive to the environment. Now, technically, our friend can grow hair and fingernails making them able to grow, and reproduce cells. Our friend can give of waste by going to the bathroom, sneezing, and coughing so he/she can excrete. A person can feed our friend so, he can get nutrition. So, concluding the question of our friend’s life, he is technically alive.

I think this person is dead because the brain controls the 7 life processes. He can’t move without the brain telling him what to do. He can respire because he has a machine to respire for him. He can’t sense anything because his brain can’t process it. This person isn’t able to grow because the brain can’t tell the cells to grow. He can’t reproduce without his brain telling the cells to divide and reproduce. He can’t excrete without his brain telling the body to get rid of the waste. Finally, he can get nutrition because he can get nutrition from tubes because he can’t swallow. This is why I think this person is dead.

  16. If someone that I know was involved in a serious car accident, and that the were brain dead, I would feel that they are not alive because they can not do the 7 life processes. He can most likely move, grow, and excrete, but he isn't sensitive to his surroundings, isn't respiring, can't reproduce, and can't obtain necessary nutrients if his brain is temporarily stopped/not conscious. But, you can still breathe, grow, and move while unconscious. So unfortunately, this friend, relative, or what ever, is not alive. (Non-living).

  17. I think that she would be dead even though she is still in somewhat alive. After a car crash when you have brain damage you are in a coma. When you are in a coma you are unable to be aware of your surroundings and unable to move. Also when you are in a coma or essentially brain dead you can’t breath or get nutrition on your own so they put you machines that do all of it for you. When you are brain dead you don’t have the ability to do anything so you are dead. You can no longer breath without machines and even if they put you on a machine you wouldn’t be on it for long. Being brain dead your brain no longer has the ability to work so it shuts down along with the rest of your body. This is why I think that she would be brain dead.

  18. I believe that he or she is dead, because he is brain dead and when your brain is dead it can't tell your body what to do and or when to move. Also when you are brain dead you can't do all of seven life process there for you are not living. Thank you Mr. Andrews

  19. If the person was in fact "Brain Dead" I think that that person would be dead. I think that the person would be dead because that person would not be doing their life processes. For example, the person could not think of doing the act of movement, respiration, sensitivity etc. If the person could not do even a couple of their life processes, they would be considered dead. Therefore, if that person was to be announced "Brain Dead", I personally think that person would be dead and not living.

  20. I think the person is still living because the term brain dead could just mean there is damage to the brain. If the person could still move they would be alive. This persons brain is just not doing as much as it use to.To me the term brain just means that the brain does less than. This person is still alive if they can eat, move, give of waste, and feel their surroundings. This person is alvie because they just have brain damage. They can still feel things, eat, give of waste, and move.Samantha.P

  21. Based on the what we have learned about the seven life processes, this person who got into a car accident is dead because they can no longer do all the life processes. Brain Dead means that they are in a state where their brain is dead and they have no hope of survival or recovery. Once their brain is dead, they heart will continue to beat for six minutes, and then they will die. When a person is Brain Dead, they can no longer move because the brain is no longer sending signals to the muscles and organs to move. The person can’t respirate because their brain isn't sending signals to the lungs to breathe in and out. The only way that the person would be able to respirate would be if they were attached to a machine that supplied oxygen for them. This person is also no longer sensitive because they can’t see anything, hear anything, or use any of their other senses to tell them what is going on around them. Even if they could do that stuff, their brain wouldn’t be able to process it so even then they wouldn't be sensitive. They can’t grow because they brain is the center of all hormones, including growth hormones. Because the brain is dead, those hormones can’t be released. They can’t reproduce because once the brain is dead, then cells can’t get the materials they need to reproduce. The person can’t excrete because the brain produces hormones that tell and allow the body to sweat, cough, sneeze, and do all they stuff it need to do to get rid of waste. Finally, the person can’t receive any nutrition because they brain can’t send signals to the digestive system to break down the food and turn it into energy. Because the person is Brain Dead and can no longer do all the life processes, but was not processed, this person is dead.

  22. If someone was "Brain Dead" they would be considered dead. They would because without your brain, you can not do a majority of the seven life processes. They would not be able to move without their brain telling them to. They would also not be able to do is reproduce or grow. This is because they would not be able to multiply and cells in their body. This person would also not be able to have any sensitivity of anything going on around them. Another thing they would not be able to do is respire or get nutrition without the help of a machine. The would also not be able to breathe, so they would not be able to excrete. In all, using the seven life processes, I do not think that someone who is brain dead would be considered alive.

If say my friend, became brain dead, I would have to say that he/she was alive. He/she can complete all the life processes but move and sense. He/she cannot move or sense. He/she cannot sense because he/she is unaware of their surroundings. He/she cannot move because your brain sends little messages to your muscles to tense and relax over and over. But because his/her brain is dead, it can no longer send those messages to the body because it is dead and can no longer function. He/she is feed nutrition and therefore excretes. He/she grows because their nose and ears never stop growing. He/she cells reproduce. Even though this process is performed from a machine, she can breathe. With all of these points, my conclusion to him/her being alive, in my opinion, is alive.

  24. The person, who the doctors said was “brain dead” is dead. When someone is brain dead, their brain is completely nonfunctional. The heart cannot pump blood to parts of the body. The person get not reproduce cells, get nutrition, or give away excretion. The person can not move or be aware of his or her surroundings. He or she is dead. The person can not do all 7 life processes. The body cannot function without the brain.

  25. That person is no longer alive for these reasons. First, the brain is something that functions the whole body and if a person is brain dead that means that their brain is no longer functioning if the brain is no longer functioning neither is the body. Second, the brain controls the hearts process so when the brain dies the heart is no longer able to do it's process. Third, even if they replaced all of the stuff that is functioned by the brain your body would be dead so you would be a fake person. Lastly, if you don't have a brain you can't think and even if your body was fine without your brain you would not be able to do all of the stuff a person does on a daily basis. All in all if that person is brain dead they will no longer be considered alive because the brain functions the whole body and if your brain is dead than your body will die to. CameronB

  26. Yes this person is still very alive. And even though they may not be exactly the same, they would still have a heart beat, and they could still hear, see, feel, and taste. And, they can still "use" respiration; sweat, use the restroom, breathe ect. If this were to happen to someone, I would not count them any less alive than they were before!

He can't get nutrition, he can breath but he can not respond to his surroundings. He can still grow, he can give off waste because he can still breath. He has most of the 7 life processes which means he is alive.

  29. I think that he/she is dead since every single persons body is controlled by the brain which makes your body do the life processes. By then being "Brain Dead" then they cannot be alive. If that person uses an object to maintain his brain then he/she would still be dead since that thing is helping the person to stay "alive".

  30. I would say that my friend would be alive. She or he would be on the verge of death though. I am not even positive if my friend is alive. I am not sure if “it” is doing the cycle sensitivity and respiration. If my friend is not doing these steps, he/she would be dead. You have to do all seven steps to be considered alive. If she is still able to do all these things she/he would be okay and still alive.

  33. For my scenario I am going to say that my friend was ran over by a car a was paralyzed from the neck down. Before she was ran over her doctor told her that she had lung cancer and they had to remove her lungs right away and those were replaced by a machine. My friend would technically still be alive because she can move her lips and anything on her face, she can resperate because the machine helps her, she is sensitive to things around her, her hair can still grow, she can still reproduce cells, she can still excrete waste through sweat and such, and lastly she can take in nutrition through food. This all means that my friend can do all of the life processes and if anything does all of the life processes that means they are living.

I think this person is no longer living, so in other words he is dead. To begin with, he can not do all of the seven life processes. He can move because he can still blink and that counts as movement. He can respirate because he is still able to breathe. He is NOT sensitive to his surroundings because he is still aware of his surroundings. He can grow because he has the ability to grow he might not need to grow right now but he has the ability to. He cannot reproduce because his brain has shut off and his brain can't tell his cells to divide in half. He can excrete because he is able to exhale. He cannot obtain nutrition because his brain is unable to send those commands to the rest of the body which would enable him to obtain nutrition from food. This is why I think this person is no longer alive/dead.

I think that my friend would be dead.

  37. If this person is considered “brain dead” think this person is still living and they are considered dead. Reasons they are considered to be living are the following: They have probably been put on life support, a ventilator which supplies oxygen to the body which in turns keeps the heart beating. They can have involuntary movement to their arms and legs. They are fed through a feeding tube for nutrition so they can grow. Due to the feeding tube they have human waste which is released through a catheter. Reasons they would be considered dead; if they were not on life support their body would not be able to produce the seven life processes. Without a ventilator they would not breathe therefore, no oxygen for the heart to beat. No feeding tube they would not have nutrition, therefore they could not grow or have excretion.

They can still move, breathe (respire), react to their surroundings (sensitivity), grow, their cells can multiply (reproduce), excrete, and obtain nutrients (nutrition). Our definition to life is to be able to do all of the seven life processes. When you think about it, if you have ever heard of or known somebody who is brain dead, they are truly alive. They can still do all of the life processes too. For these reasons, I believe that that person truly is alive.

  39. If a person I know got in a car crash and I hear they were brain dead, by knowing the 7 processes of life also known as Mrs. Gren than I would consider them dead. This is because brain dead means your brain cannot function. You can not move, have sensitivity, grow, reproduce, excrete. This is because your brain sends signals to the rest of your body allowing you to move or be aware of your surroundings. By being brain dead your brain cannot send any signals to any part of your body. The only thing keeping you slightly alive is tube giving you oxygen. Other than that, one pull of a plug and you're dead. They can also feed you using a different tube. In order to be alive you need all 7 life processes and if you're brain dead you only have respiration and nutrition. In conclusion if a person I knew was in a car accident and I heard he or she was brain dead I would consider them dead.

  40. This scenario sort’a happened to my grandpa four months ago when he had a heart attack and had brain damage and was brain dead, so am basing this off of him. He had movement because he could twitch and kinda move his eyes a little. My grandpa also could respirator after a few days, he did not need the breathing tube thing. He although did not have sensitivity, and this what upsetted my family the most that he couldn't respond or talk to us. Even if he was a full grown man, he did have growth because he was not decaying. He had reproduction because his cells where diving and making new ones. Since he was a living thing he could have Excretion because he could still go to the bathroom and breath, etc. My grandpa could get nutrition through a tube, just like you when you came out of surgery. Sadly he did have a living will so we cut him off of nutrition and he died a couple days later. But he was living after the heart attack and had brain damage.

  50. Star (the person I know/ in the car crash) brain damage is pretty bad. Movement: it is really hard to move because you’re brain controls your movement, so I think she can’t move because her “brain is dead.” Energy: I think that since she can’t move i’m not sure but she can get energy because why if she drinks a energy drink then she gets energy so, yes. Sensitivity: yes I think because why if just sits on a bench and theres trees everywhere with bees she is sensitive to all that. Growth: I think she can grow maybe just a little thing like her toe or her nose so, yes. Reproduction: I think she can reproduce maybe not a baby but her cells can reproduce. Excretion: yes she can poop she might of got bad damage to her brain but it doesn’t mean she can’t poop or give waste. Nutrition: I think she can get nutrition because she can just sit in the sun for like a hour. So what I think is that she has to do all the life processes so she is dead because she can’t move.

In this real life scenario there is a man that was in a car incident and is now "brain dead". Is he dead or alive? To decide we must look at the seven life processes and decide if he is doing each one. The first life process is if the person is moving. Well since he is brain dead and the brain sends signals to his body he can't move. So he can't move. The next life process is respiration or getting energy from food. His brain is the one that takes in the energy and controls the body. He can't use his sensitivity. He can't grow because he cant reproduce his cells and that is two life processes. He can't get rid of waste unless he is on a machine and he eat food or get the nutrition in his body. He can't do any of the seven life processes so he is dead. He is not non-living because he was living at one time. This shows that everything is centered around the brain and how important it is. The man is dead because he is not doing any of the seven life processes.

If the person had damage to their brain I'd still think the person is still alive. If the person wasn't alive, then he or she wouldn't be able to do the life processes MRS GREN. The life processes are movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion, and nutrition. If the person was "Brain Dead" he or she could maybe still think. Their emotions would still go on as a regular person. They could still move around carefully and paying attention to their environment around them, which would also count as their sensitivity; their reaction wouldn't be as quick but he or she could still react. If the person were dead they wouldn't be breathing, but the person isn't dead and can still use their lungs in respiratory. He or she would grow, counting the hair on their body, and reproduce with cells in the person. They'd eat and drink water to stay healthy in nutrition, and with that they would have to digest what they ate which is excretion. The person that has brain damage would still be alive doing the life processes just with more care than another that doesn't have brain damage.

Because if they're brain dead.. that means there brain in completely damaged and because the brain is one of several things your body cant live without, Without your brain..you can't do anything...literally..nothing, If you think about it without the brain you cant move, gain energy, sense your surroundings, grow, reproduce, excrete, and eat. You cannot do any of the life processes with out your brain. And without the life processes... your dead.

  55. I do not think that this brain dead person is still living. I do not think that this brain dead person is still living because brain death is when your brain gets permanently damaged and is not working any more. Because your brain is the organ in your body that gives functions to other organs, when it stops working everything else will stop working. Some body functions will work for a few minutes like your heart will keep pumping but your brain controls your breathing so there is no respiratory action when a person becomes brain dead. You will not breath because your brain will not be able to send signals to the respiratory area. After you are brain dead your body will not move any more. There is no more sensitivity in your body because without your brain it can not process information. Without signals from your brain your body will not grow at all. Your body will have no splitting cells and will not reproduce. Your body will also not sweat any more or excrete without signals from your brain. If you are dead you no longer need food or nutrition. That is how I can tell that this brain dead person is actually dead.

  56. I think that the person is dead because if your brain can't move then you can't move your body. Also you aren't able to feel anything so you don't have sensitivity. You are not able to give off waste, eat, you still can't grow, and you can't make energy without your brain working. So I think that the person is dead because he/she can't do the whole life process.

  57. To me, yes, the person would still be living. Although the person is "Brain dead," it still has all the characteristics of being alive. The person can still move, grow, get nutrition, have respiration, reproduce, excrete and be sensitive to multiple things. Without the brain telling the body to do, the body will do it. And if the persons body is hooked up to machines, the machines will do it for him/her. So yes, to me, the person is still alive.

  58. If someone I knew that was in a serious car accident and got hurt really bad and I heard that in the car crash they had some damage to there brian and I also heard they are Brain dead .No I don't think the person I knew is alive anymore because I heard that they had some brain damage so there brain dead, which I think means there brain is dead so they can't do the seven processes of life but they did at one point but not any more.

  59. Based on our definition of living, I would say that you are not alive. The reasons why I think this because you can't feed yourself to get nutrition, which means there is no movement. Your brain controls almost everything, and considering yourself "Brain Dead", there's no reason why you should be considered alive. I'm sure you would have to excrete some alternate way because your brain isn't working. Also, you might still be able to reproduce as in cell reproduction throughout the body. To be able to be called alive, you have to be able to do all of the life processes, and my friend isn't doing all of them. Therefore, my friend is dead as well as brain dead.

  60. I think that person is not leaving because he doesn't have a brain and i think the brain do all the think so i think the person is not leaving because the person don't have a brain

  61. That person is still living because just because the term "Brain Dead" has the word dead in it, does not mean that their brain is actually dead. It is just saying that that person's brain does function as properly. That person can still do all of the life processes. Therefore, they are still alive!

  62. I think that the person would still be living. I think that because he still does all the life processes but he is just a little slow.

  63. I think that brain death is very serious. In a book I read, an entire city was brain dead and they couldn't process anything. They could see and hear, their brains just didn't process it fast enough. Anyway, if that person was brain dead, they wouldn't be alive because they can't respirate. If your body can't respirate, then it can't receive proper nutrients it needs for survival. So if that person who had brain damage, in fact, brain death, their chances for survival are slim. That person would be alive for a little while, but they will die soon. Although, their brain can turn back on at any time.

  64. The term "brain dead" does not actually mean that the person's brain is truly dead, it just means that it functions incorrectly. The person that is brain dead would still be able to move, respire, sense, grow, reproduce, excrete, and obtain nutrition. Because they can participate in all seven life processes, one can come to the conclusion that this person who is brain dead, is still alive.

  65. I believe that this person who is "brain dead" is truly alive. Their brain may be referred to as "dead," but it only means that their brains functions incorrectly. They can still move, respire, sense, grow, reproduce, excrete, and obtain nutrition. Because they can participate in all seven of the life processes, they are, in fact, alive, regardless of their brain being "dead."

  66. This person would still be alive. They’re still alive because they can do all 7 of the life processes. This person can still move, respire, grow, reproduce, excrete, retrieve nutrients, and they have sensitivity. The only thing that is different in this person’s life is that they won’t be able to think right anymore.

  67. This person is still alive. He is still able to do all the life processes. He may have been limited a little more, but he can still do movement with his hands and feet. He can still respire because he can eat food. He can still grow a little taller. He can also reproduce cells in his body and can sweat and give off waste so he can excrete. He still needs nutrients like eating and drinking. Lastly he is still knows what's going around him. Those are the seven life processes and he is still able to do all of them. This man is still alive. - Ellie D.

  68. The person is still alive because the heart is still working and the organs are still working, the reason why person is still alive is because they put the person on a special machine so the person could be alive.

  69. Why do you and I still live? The reason that we are "alive" is because we do all seven processes. The same goes with this man, he can still do all seven so he is officially alive.

  70. This person would still be living because they can do all 7 life processes. This person can move, grow, respire, reproduce, excrete, retrieve nutrients, and they have sensitivity. So therefore this person is alive just less alive than he/she is now.

  72. i would say he is dead because his brain is really not controlling him so he is not doing the seven process, he can not talk, move ,reproduce, etc.

  73. i think that person is still alive because he/she is just BRAIN dead, not fully DEAD, and he/she can still do all for the 7 life processes...

  74. I believe the term "brain dead" does not mean the person's brain is actually dead, or else they wouldn't be alive. I think this term means that their brain cannot function properly and gives the person disabilities such as the inability to talk or write. This means that the person can still move, respire, sense, grow, reproduce, excrete, and obtain nutrients, so the person is not truly dead.

  75. This person is still alive. Just because he/she is considered "brain dead" doesn't mean they can't do the life processes. He/she can still move, breath, is sensitive to things, grow, reproduce, give off waste, and get the nutrition this person needs. So this person is still living.

  76. If one of my friends were in a car crash and their brain was dead, I would think that they were dead. Recently I heard a story about an eighty year old woman that was running a 24 mile race. She fell and hit her head really hard but insisted on finishing the race. She finished the race, but died shortly after because she hit her head so hard that it damaged her brain. If your brain isn't "alive" and well fountioned then you might as well be dead because you can not do the life processes anylonger.

  77. If I found out that on one of my friends were in a car crash and they have damage in the brain I would automatically think there dead. Because if they're brain dead that means there brain in completely damaged and because the brain is one of several things your body cant live without. Without your brain you can't do anything literally nothing, If you think about it without the brain you cant move, gain energy, sense your surroundings, grow, reproduce, excrete, and eat. You cannot do any of the life processes with out your brain. And without the life processes... your dead.
